FOLLOW ALONG WITH WHAT I GOT GOING ON
As I was rifling through this old brochure collection of mine, I came upon a folder I have had for well over 30 years. It was given to me by Gary Cooke, who owned the original Porsche dealership in Calgary. My dad and Gary had a mutual acquaintance so we always received the royal treatment when we visited the Cooke Motors showroom on Centre Street. In fact, I remember Gary and his wife visiting us and he parked his black 928S4 on our driveway for all the neighborhood kids to admire. I am curious if anyone else remembers Cooke Motors. The building is now a Shoppers/Tim Hortons.
With a quick Internet search, I tracked down Gary Cooke. He is the lease portfolio manager at Hyatt Infiniti. He remembered my dad and said the folder brought back good memories for him as well. Very cool.

My uncle took me there every weekend to look at the Jaguars.

Sounds like you have a pretty cool uncle. I used to take the bus and C-Train from the deep SE to check out the showroom back in the day.

I certainly do. Don Cooke was a friend of mine. He used to let us in the shop on Sundays in the late 70's to work on our muscle cars. Amazing to be surrounded by Porsches, Jags, MG's, and Triumph's! The building was originally Time Motors, a Renault dealer. My father built it.

Thanks so much for sharing that with me Michael. I find these elements of Calgary history absolutely fascinating. Would you happen to have any photographs from that era?

I replied to your email, but it bounced back. I have no relevant pictures but I have been picking my way through my fathers files lately. There's always a chance I come across something interesting. If I do, I will share.

Yes I remember Cooke motors, my dad used to take me and my twin brother down to look at the porsches and Jaguars. Being from England, it is a fond memory because we got to see cars that were familiar to us, it was so different coming to Canada and seeing all of the big trucks and suburban back in the 80’s but Cooke motors always reminded me of home. It’s a shame that it’s a Tim hortons now.

Thanks for the message Chris. Your name rings a bell. Did you by chance live in the SE? I was fortunate to touch base with Gary Cooke a while back. He is still in the car industry. Selling Infinitis at Hyatt, I think it was. I can imagine what a shock it was seeing so many trucks when you came to Canada. It is still that way! I was fortunate to detail a Lancia Integrale and Renault Clio V6 Sport in recent weeks. A real taste of Europe!

I bought a Porsche 928S from Cooke motor 1986. So I can remember all those good old days with Cooke Motor. In fact I still own the marvelous 928S today. Comments are closed.
