I am amazed by the number of amazing supercars that are out there in the world today. When I was a kid, I clamored for recently released books and magazines that featured the radical supercars of the day. I was often disappointed with the cars featured, as there just wasn't much in the way of exotics in the early to mid-80's. In fact, some of the cars publishers tried to pass off as "supercars" were downright hideous. Here's a good sampling of what I had to deal with growing up. As you'll see, there were some cool rides that have definitely stood the test of time, but the list quickly devolves into ridiculousness. What was you favorite "supercar" of the 80's, and what was your least favorite? Comment below:

Hmmm....since I am older than you it would be appropriate for me to list cars of the '60's that caught my attention. The #1 car would be my '68 Pontiac Firebird 400...gun metal gray...with a factory built in tachometer on the hood. It was beautiful to drive at night with that tach lit up on the hood. Of course my buddy's brother in high school had a '64 or '65 Chevy Impala...red with white convertible top. 4 speed stick shift on the floor. I know, Impala doesn't sound very exciting does it. I will go back and check out some pictures on line. I had (dreamed of having) a girlfriend with some nice green Austin Healy convertible...she was real but she was just a friend. Several kids in high school who were not in "college prep" drove Corvettes which I didn't like then, didn't like in the '80s and don't like now. I wouldn't go out of my way to have one as a project. Wrong personality type for me. (Now how's that for stereotyping...not good I know...but....). Of course my roommate at Ft. Bragg had a '68 or '69 Chevy Camaro....not sure of much...it was red. Just fyi...the story on "lead dog" moniker....when we lived in Jupiter, FL and I worked for some golf association...we found this dive to drink a few beers at up in Hobe Sound, FL and there was a wooden sign on the wall..."If you ain't the lead dog the scenery never changes". PS to my earlier post. Actually there is one outstanding car from the '80's that I would be remiss in not mentioning...maybe 2. It is a "Super Car" only to me....we bought a 1989 Mazda 626 LX 5 speed in December of '88. It had 15 miles on it....we paid $15k. I still have it today....263,000 miles later. I have shipped it across country twice...once from NC to CA in 2002 and then 3 years ago from CA to FL. We also purchased a 1986 RX-7 on the same day...Ferrari Red I called it. Wish I hadn't sold it when I moved to CA. The 626 is a member of our family. Comments are closed.
